There is something magical about watching ideas come alive in that space, surrounded by people who understand the joy and challenge of writing.
We arrived at Casablanca Manor, a rustic, country-style haven with tin roofs and the heart of the countryside beating through its walls. The serene setting, enveloped by nature’s sounds, offered a tranquil atmosphere.
Writers were invited to step out of their comfort zones from the very first day. Each guest leaned into the writing prompt exercises as the rain hammered for two days on the tin roof with an intensity that demanded attention. But instead of distraction, it became our rhythm. Writers leaned into the sound, letting it guide them as they wrote, reflected and grew.

Every morning began with a gentle stretch session to ease the tension that so often builds in the neck and shoulders when writing. Afterward, our group gathered for a hearty breakfast that warmed both body and spirit. Coffee breaks were often a quick dash to the refreshment station to get a bit of a boost before the next session, with many writers taking their rusks or biscuits and caffeinated boost back to their writing desks.
Tea times became their own little celebrations. Sometimes there were muffins, sometimes scones with cream and once even bags of popcorn, which made the room feel light and joyful. There were no TVs, radios or daily chores to distract writers from their quests. There was fierce competition for the winning team in the giant Jenga game on night two. But everyone retired early to their rooms where there were writings for those writers who were in flow.
Writers watched video clips, fully immersing themselves in every laugh, tear and gasp. They felt each emotion as they practiced the “show-don’t-tell exercise”. This “feeling” exercise became a challenge that carried them through the retreat.
The home-cooked, country-style meals were comforting and hearty. As our word counts grew, I suspect our jeans may have fit a little tighter too. I must confess that I devoured the Lindt chocolates on the pillow the moment I stepped foot into my room each evening.
We learned from one another, sharing stories, struggles and laughter. By the third day, the rain gave way to clear skies. We enjoyed a hearty outdoor dinner around a crackling fire, with the candles and fairy lights to add ambiance to the lively chatter. It came complete with traditional potjiekos and another classic South African favourite, malva pudding with custard. By day three, the sun broke through, and by day four we celebrated our progress under its golden light.
The last day was a deeply connected event when writers shared heartfelt messages that celebrated each other and added fuel to our creativity.
We left Casablanca Manor with full notebooks, fuller hearts and a renewed sense of purpose in our writing. The Writer’s Retreat 2025 reminded us that even in the storm, creativity thrives when given space to breathe.
The next retreat will on Thursday 26 February to Sunday 01 March 2026.
