This morning at Pilates, I felt as though I was going to fall over.
I have been going to this class for several weeks now. Just when I think I have the moves under control, the coach introduces something new.
I looked around at the other students. Their form seemed more stable than mine. Their movements were smoother, their balance more sure-footed. My legs trembled as I stretched, and I could feel a bead of sweat slide down my back. My mind whispered, I am in the wrong place.
And yet, every time I climb the brick stairs after class, feeling the ache in my muscles, I know in my heart that I am exactly where I need to be. Every week, I climb those stairs with a little less resistance. The cool air feels a little less chilling and even the taste of water from my bottle is sharper, as if reminding me that growth, however slow, is there.
That moment of wobbling, of questioning whether you belong, is something I see all the time in my authors. Writing a book does not arrive wrapped in comfort. It shows up in the middle of life, when things are messy, noisy and inconvenient.
Life Wobbles While You Write
I have had clients lose a parent in the middle of their manuscript. I have seen authors endure the heartbreak of divorce. One author joined my program after burnout and questioned his self-worth almost every week. Another faced the stress of a financial audit while trying to focus on writing. Others moved homes. One even moved continents, unpacking boxes while trying to unpack her own thoughts.
And me? I wobble too. Just this past week, I felt the sting of compassion fatigue from the stories I hear. I found myself feeling snappy with my family and I knew I had to practice some self-care. Some interviews leave my throat tight and my eyes blurred with tears. I sometimes close my laptop and sit in silence, listening to the faint hum of the refrigerator or the distant bark of a neighbour’s dog, trying to steady my heart again.
This past week, I also visited the emergency room to be with a family member. The harsh lights, the offending needles, the sharp scent of antiseptic and the low murmur of voices behind curtains all pressed down on me. In that heavy week, I still carved out space to write sections of my new book, Taming the Monster of Postpartum Depression. I carried not only my own emotions but the weight of all the stories I had gathered from mothers and fathers who had fought through their own shadows. Writing in that space was not easy, but it reminded me again that books are born in the middle of life, not outside of it.
The truth is that writing never comes at the perfect time. Geysers burst, cars break down and children get sick. The smell of your dinner burning on the stove while you are still trying to finish one more paragraph is another example of how finding a way to add writing into your life can seem impossible. Life always finds a way of pressing in.
But here is what I have learned. A legacy is not built in stillness. Breaking new ground requires grit, determination and the courage to keep going even when your hands shake.
Why Does Writing Feel Wobbly?
When you first begin writing, it often feels overwhelming. Much like that Pilates class, there is always a new move to learn. Structure, pacing, dialogue, editing and marketing. The list feels endless. You look at other authors and their polished sentences gleam like perfect postures. You compare your first draft to their final masterpiece and feel clumsy.
This wobble does not constitute a failure. It is part of the process.
Think of it as strengthening a muscle. At first, it burns. Your body resists. But over time, that wobble becomes balance. That is how an author’s mindset is formed.
The Perfect Time is an Illusion
Many people tell me they want to write a book. They say they will start when work slows down. Or when the children are older. Or when the house is finally in order.
But let me share a secret. There is no perfect time.
If you wait for life to calm down, you will wait forever. Writing a book happens in the noise and the chaos. It happens when the kettle whistles in the kitchen while you are mid-sentence, and when your phone buzzes with messages you decide to ignore for a little while longer.
And here is the beautiful part. The books that move us most are rarely written in times of calm. They are written in the valleys of grief, in the stillness after heartbreak, or in the middle of noisy households where determination is stronger than distraction.
If you are wobbling right now, take heart. It means you are alive. It means your story has weight.
Writing as Legacy
A book is not simply ink on paper. It is a vessel of legacy.
When I work with authors, I often ask them, “What do you want people to remember you for?”
Here is the truth. Your emails will be deleted. Your social media posts will vanish into timelines. But a book lingers. Its pages carry the scent of paper years after it is printed. Its words echo in the ears of future generations.
A book is your voice made tangible. It is your chance to leave behind not only what you did but who you were. And that is why the wobble matters. Legacy is forged in persistence, not in ease.
Mindset Matters
Just as Pilates strengthens your core, writing strengthens your mindset.
When life shakes you, writing teaches resilience. It trains you to show up at the desk even when you feel raw. It teaches you to keep typing through self-doubt. It whispers back to your inner critic, “I am still here.”
Mindset is the difference between saying:
- “I will write when I feel inspired,” and “I will write because I have committed.”
- “This chapter is a disaster,” and “This chapter is a draft that I can refine.”
- “I am not enough,” and “Every author once began here.”
A strong mindset does not remove the wobble. It helps you stand tall through it.
Isn’t that what legacy is all about?

Hello, I am Kim Vermaak
I spent most of my adult life helping other companies build their dream and their brands.
After I turned 40, I wondered if there was more to life than taking care of children and slaving away to earn a living.
I wanted to create a legacy for my children and the next generation. I found that through my books I could celebrate who I am as well as teach others to earn a living through their writing.
Being an author is not a hobby. It is a business, and it is my passion to teach authors how to thrive in that business. I look forward to seeing your book business grow.
