Your Book Isn’t Broken, But Something Else Might Be.
Have you ever whispered, “This book just isn’t working for me”?
You are not alone.
I’ve heard those exact words many times. Sometimes it’s in a shaky voice over a video call. Sometimes it’s behind tired eyes at a coffee shop. And sometimes, it’s in silence, written between the lines of a long email. The once-bright dream dims. The air around it feels heavier. What was once exciting now feels like standing in a room with no windows and no way out.
There are two points on the journey where most authors feel like giving up.
The first is when they are writing. At first, the idea sparkles. Your mind races with images, voices and scenes. You can almost smell the new pages and feel the weight of your book in your hands. But then the process gets tough. The days stretch on. Words don’t land right. The blinking cursor starts to mock you and it takes longer than you planned for emotionally. It costs more than you budgeted for financially. You feel tired, drained and alone. So you stop.
The second point is after publishing. Especially in self-publishing, there’s a quiet hope that the book will somehow take on a life of its own. That it will soar. That readers will come rushing in. Instead, the silence is loud. The notifications stay empty. Your heart sinks as the dream feels like it’s slipping through your fingers.
So let’s ask the real question:
Why isn’t the book working?
The answer is uncomfortable but honest.
A book does not work for you.
You do the work, then the book reflects the work you have put in.
Many aspiring authors quit because they didn’t set clear, specific, and measurable goals. They write “when they have time.” But time doesn’t stretch for your dream unless you claim it. That’s why in our Write Learn and Earn coaching programme, we help authors create timelines and realistic writing targets. When you show up consistently, you gain momentum. You feel it. Like a hum in your chest. Like the pages finally starting to breathe.
But what happens when life throws you off course? What about when there’s a family emergency, a sick child, or a surprise audit at work? These are the moments where resilience becomes essential. You can smell the pressure. You can taste the stress. And yet, you still have to find your way back.
Research tells us that over 94% of people give up on their goals.
That’s why support matters.
That’s why being emotionally connected to your “why” is vital.
And then, for those who make it to the publishing finish line, there’s the next challenge.
Sales!
If your only reason for writing was to make money, then every missed sale will feel like a failure. But books that are written to serve, to inspire, or to build credibility last longer. They carry more weight.
They speak louder in quiet rooms and they smell like possibility and sound like truth. The more you invest in the sales process, the better your results will be. Just like any other business, books don’t merely require a book launch… they require consistent work. You see, we often overestimate what we can do in the short term and underestimate what we can do in the long term.
So if you’ve found yourself saying, “This book is not working for me,” I want to gently challenge that belief.
It’s not the book.
It’s not your coach.
It’s your follow-through.
There are moments to pause. There are times to slow down. But quitting is not an option if you still carry that dream inside of you.
Because beyond the cost of publishing, beyond the time and the tears, is the far greater cost of regret. You may try to blame the book, or the tools, or the timing. But at the heart of it, the real answer lies in your commitment to yourself.
A book is just a tool. But in the hands of a committed writer, it becomes an asset. Something that smells like ink and ambition, but it is something that touches lives and opens doors.
If you came across a business owner who never showed up to work, who never tracked results or adjusted their approach, would you say the product didn’t work?
No.
You’d place the responsibility where it belongs.
And in this case, you are the owner of your book business.
So quit quitting on yourself.
If you’re still serious about how to write a book and want to self-publish with impact, our next coaching intake is opening soon. We’ll walk beside you. But you must be willing to walk.
Your pen is waiting.
Your message still matters.
Now is not the time to give up.

How Keywords Can Help You Sell More Books
Knowing what customers want is a key component for success in business. Companies dedicate large amounts of their annual budget to research in this area.
Hello, I am Kim Vermaak
I spent most of my adult life helping other companies build their dream and their brands.
After I turned 40, I wondered if there was more to life than taking care of children and slaving away to earn a living.
I wanted to create a legacy for my children and the next generation. I found that through my books I could celebrate who I am as well as teach others to earn a living through their writing.
Being an author is not a hobby. It is a business, and it is my passion to teach authors how to thrive in that business. I look forward to seeing your book business grow.
