I can still smell it.
That comforting aroma wafts through the air. The first hiss of steamed milk. The gentle swirl of foam meets rich espresso. As the froth clings to the edge of the cup like a silk scarf, the warmth seeps through your hands as you wrap them around the mug.
One sip of cappuccino and the world feels more manageable. The velvety taste coats your tongue with just the right balance of bitter and smooth. For a few moments, it’s like clarity in a cup.
But for me right now, that clarity is a lie.
You see, I’m in a season where clarity doesn’t come from caffeine. It comes from cutting it out.
As a book coach, I guide writers through the highs and lows of bringing their stories to life. I talk about accountability, creative flow, and mindset. But I’m also a wife, a mom, a speaker, and currently completing a Train-the-Trainer course. I’m also building a brand and mentoring others. My daughter is about to take part in her very first dance showcase. It’s a joyful milestone, but also a reminder of the unexpected costs and time demands that life throws at us.
I realised something recently. I was waking up more anxious than inspired. And when I really paid attention, I saw the pattern. On the days I had that glorious cappuccino, my anxiety spiked. That caffeine, so good in theory, was nudging me toward panic.
Caffeine can stimulate the “fight or flight” response. For those of us with high-functioning anxiety, it doesn’t just sharpen our focus. It sharpens our nerves. It amplifies the noise. It pulls us further into our own heads when we’re already living there too much.
And writing my current book, Taming the Monster, has required deep emotional work. I’m revisiting a time in my life where my anxiety wasn’t just uncomfortable. It was dangerous. So for now, I’m choosing clarity over comfort. Until this book is finished, there’s no coffee. No alcohol. More sleep, More breath and more silence.
Because writing a book isn’t just an intellectual exercise. It is emotional labour. And it’s why I encourage the writers I work with to protect their health, both physical and mental, as their story depends on it.
Sometimes that means giving up Netflix so you can finally sleep well enough to write. Sometimes that means cutting sugar, caffeine, or that second glass of wine. Not forever. But for a season. A sacred one.
It’s also why I created the Book Writing Retreat from 6–9 November. It is a tranquil, restorative space designed to help you reconnect with your creativity. Reset your nervous system. Finally, give your book the focused time it deserves. There are only 5 rooms available. The environment’s design supports deep work, peace, and progress.
So if you’re ready to cut the noise and honour your story, maybe this is the space you’ve been needing.
Finishing your book isn’t just about discipline.
It’s about strength, mindset, and a little of surrender.
With calm and clarity,

How Keywords Can Help You Sell More Books
Knowing what customers want is a key component for success in business. Companies dedicate large amounts of their annual budget to research in this area.
Hello, I am Kim Vermaak
I spent most of my adult life helping other companies build their dream and their brands.
After I turned 40, I wondered if there was more to life than taking care of children and slaving away to earn a living.
I wanted to create a legacy for my children and the next generation. I found that through my books I could celebrate who I am as well as teach others to earn a living through their writing.
Being an author is not a hobby. It is a business, and it is my passion to teach authors how to thrive in that business. I look forward to seeing your book business grow.
