Writing your book takes discipline, but a writing retreat can fast-track your progress. Discover how entrepreneurs and coaches can create space to finish their manuscripts.
There’s a persistent myth floating around the entrepreneurial and coaching world: If you were serious about your book, you’d just sit down and write it.
And yes, sometimes that’s exactly what needs to happen. I tell my clients this all the time. Writing is a discipline. It’s not always about inspiration or waiting for the perfect moment. Some days, the magic comes from simply showing up. Even if your words are clumsy or the chapter feels disjointed, the act of writing consistently builds momentum.
But I’ve also learned something just as important:
If you want to fast-track your writing, immerse yourself in a writing retreat.
Even Book Coaches Need Space to Write
As a book coach and publisher, I live and breathe the writing process. You’d think that would make it easier. But the truth is, I face the same battles as many of my clients. Family responsibilities, business deadlines, the constant pull of multitasking.
Ironically, one of my most productive seasons was during the Covid-19 lockdowns. I wasn’t travelling. My schedule had cleared overnight. I found myself with the rare gift of uninterrupted time. During those quiet days, I learned how powerful it is to carve out space with no distractions, no school runs, no emails, no sudden “Mom, where’s my…?”
That season taught me something vital: you don’t always need to get away, but you do need to go deep. And that’s what a writing retreat offers.
Writing Retreats Are Not Escapes, They’re Sacred Commitments
A writing retreat is not a holiday. It’s not a luxury you indulge in once everything else is done. It is a declaration. A line in the sand that says:
My voice matters. This book matters. I am giving it space to breathe.
As entrepreneurs, coaches and speakers, we pour so much into others. But your book is a legacy. It’s a platform. And it deserves a different kind of attention, one that is focused, intentional, and uninterrupted.
That’s why I now organise writing retreats designed specifically for people like us. People with a powerful message and very full calendars.
What My Writing Retreats Look Like
Our retreats begin with a Thursday check-in and end with a Sunday check-out. We intentionally look for beautiful, spacious venues that allow you to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with your creative clarity.
These are not jam-packed, over-scheduled weekends. Instead, we create an environment of calm, focus, and creative flow. You’ll have the time to write deeply, reflect, and reconnect with your manuscript without distractions.
You also won’t be doing it alone. You’ll be surrounded by other purpose-driven writers, each one walking their own journey. The shared intention creates a collective energy that lifts everyone higher. It's one of the most powerful environments a writer can be in.
“Mommy’s or Daddy's Writing”: Why Boundaries Matter
Even after publishing multiple books, I still find myself having to say, “Mommy’s writing,” or “Love, I’m editing.”
And while my family absolutely supports me, they don’t always understand the headspace required to be fully immersed in the writing process. You can’t dip in and out of your manuscript the same way you might tackle email or admin. Writing demands presence.
A retreat removes the friction. You don’t need to explain or defend your time. Everyone around you is doing the same thing focusing on their craft. That level of mutual respect and understanding creates space for magic to happen.
Discipline Is the Foundation, but Retreats Multiply Your Results
Yes, writing is a discipline. Showing up regularly builds strength and confidence as a writer. And I will always encourage daily writing habits, even if it’s just 20 minutes a day.
But let’s be honest: when you’re juggling business, family and everything in between, those 20-minute writing sessions can stretch a manuscript over years.
A retreat, on the other hand, can give you the same progress in one focused weekend. When you remove distractions and enter a flow state, your writing accelerates. Clarity deepens, chapters form and ideas connect. What once felt out of reach becomes doable, even exciting.
The Power of Community on the Writing Journey
One of the most unexpected lessons I learned during my most productive writing season was the power of community. During the isolation of the pandemic, I began reaching out to other writers, people who were also trying to stay focused in the chaos. We began holding one another accountable, celebrating small wins, and creating time to write together.
Sometimes we’d meet on Zoom. No coaching. No critique. Just an hour of silent writing with cameras on. You’d be surprised how much you can get done when you know someone else is showing up with you.
Writing might be a solo activity, but finishing a book? That’s a team effort.
Three Types of Writing Retreats That Can Work for You
You don’t need a massive budget or a plane ticket to experience the benefits of a retreat. Here are three versions that work:
1. Home-Based Solo Retreat
- Clear your calendar for a weekend.
- Prep meals ahead of time.
- Let your family know you are not available.
- Switch off devices.
- Create a dedicated writing space.
This is powerful if you can’t travel but still need immersive time.
2. Virtual Writing Group
- Team up with other writers online.
- Set specific times to check in and write.
- Use video calls for accountability, not coaching.
- Celebrate your progress together.
It’s amazing what can happen when you’re writing alongside others who are equally focused.
3. Destination Writing Retreat
- Join a group of like-minded writers in a tranquil setting.
- Enjoy uninterrupted writing blocks and optional coaching sessions.
- Reconnect with your manuscript in a way you can’t do at home.
This is the kind of experience we create in our Thursday-to-Sunday retreats. Space to write, rest, and rediscover your creative voice.
You Don’t Need Permission, but You Might Need a Plan
If you’re still waiting for the perfect time to write your book, let me gently say that time won’t magically arrive. You have to create it.
Block the weekend.
Book the retreat.
Say out loud: “I am writing.”
Whether you join one of my retreats or create your own sacred space at home, just know this: Your book deserves room to grow. And so do you.
I’ve walked this road. I walk it still. And I would be honoured to help you take the next step.
Let’s get your book written.

Hello, I am Kim Vermaak
I spent most of my adult life helping other companies build their dream and their brands.
After I turned 40, I wondered if there was more to life than taking care of children and slaving away to earn a living.
I wanted to create a legacy for my children and the next generation. I found that through my books I could celebrate who I am as well as teach others to earn a living through their writing.
Being an author is not a hobby. It is a business, and it is my passion to teach authors how to thrive in that business. I look forward to seeing your book business grow.
